The Conservative led St Albans City & District Council built over 100 new social housing units on derelict garage sites up to 2019. The first in a generation.
The Lib Dems campaigned for more housing delivery but since taking control of the Council in 2019 have delivered zero in their first year. They have also now withdrawn the Local Plan which included provision for 14,500 new homes in the District following Planning Inspectors expressing concerns over the duty to cooperate, especially around the Railfreight proposals in Park Street.
35 further social homes proposed on the site of the Old Police Station have been delayed several years after the Lib Dems decided to re-design the scheme. The homes are now so expensive that the Council's own housing department don't want them and they will be offloaded to a housing association.
Residents are rightly frustrated over the delays and inaction on this critical issue for young people in the community.
